Preparation for crop quality testing continues this week as we meet with our partners at the Federal Grain Inspection Service. Also housed at the Albers Mill Building, FGIS plays a critical role in the crop quality process, providing grading evaluation for wheat samples received during harvest. Our collaborative project with Oklahoma continues this week focusing on whole wheat products. Also this week, visiting scholar Shikhadri Mahanta is studying the use of atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) as a green technology for flour treatment. Work has been done demonstrating that ACP is an effective treatment on grains for eliminating pest and microbial infestations. Shikhadri is examining the effect of ACP on flour strength and as a possible replacement for additives used to increase dough strength.
