This month, Dr. Jayne Bock and the technical team begin work on the next phase of a multi year project in partnership with the Oklahoma Wheat Commission. As part of their ongoing commitment to improving the quality of new varieties and finding new markets for Oklahoma wheat, OWC asked the Wheat Marketing Center (WMC) to evaluate a series of hard red winter (HRW) varieties from Dr. Brett Carver’s breeding program. WMC is looking at these varieties as HRW blending wheats for increased strength in a variety of products from whole wheat breads to hamburger buns, primarily as a replacement for the use of vital wheat gluten.
Oklahoma Wheat Commission joined the WMC board of directors in 2018 to further our shared commitment to improving the understanding of how U.S. wheat can meet the changing demands of global consumers. Established in 1965, Oklahoma Wheat Commission promotes greater use of wheat in domestic and international markets through research, market development and public education. WMC values the support and collaboration of Oklahoma Wheat commission as one of eight state wheat and grain commissions that provide most of the funding for our research and educational work promoting U.S. wheat quality.
